LEAP Institute half-day trainings are intensive, participatory events limited to a small group of participants who interact closely with Dr. Amador. Workshop attendees are introduced to the principles of LEAP® (“Listen-Empathize-Agree-Partner®”), which shows you how to quickly gain the trust of someone you are at odds with, especially someone with mental illness. Since Dr. Amador’s seminal book “I AM NOT SICK, I Don’t Need Help!” was published more than ten years ago, tens of thousands of people around the world have participated in LEAP trainings, with overwhelmingly positive results. During the course of the workshop you will learn the seven key tools in the LEAP toolkit, and the subtle nuances that can mean success or failure in using those tools. Attendees will also receive a copy of Dr. Amador’s book so they can continue to practice what they learn. LEAP® focuses on transforming the relationship first. You do not win on the strength of your argument; you win on the strength of your relationship.

NAMI-Cambridge Middlesex is underwriting and sponsoring a half-day workshop with Xavier Amador, Ph.D., author of the game-changing book on mental illness, I’m Not Sick, I Don’t Need Help. Family members, health care professionals, and first responders will all benefit from this LEAP (“Listen-Empathize-Agree-Partner®”).
Participants will learn to listen in a new way that conveys respect for the other person’s point of view. The result is an immediate lowering of tension, anger and defensiveness. As you convey genuine understanding, empathy and respect for another’s point of view, even when you disagree with it, you are free to find common ground on which you can partner.
