“Ask the Doctor” slate for Next to Normal in Boston

“Top doctors in the Boston medical community are uniting with NAMI Massachusetts and the Speakeasy Stage Company around the compelling and emotional presentation of Next to Normal, winner of the 2009 Pulitzer.  This energizing rock opera realistically reflects the life of a family living with a mental illness.  NAMI Massachusetts members have worked with the cast of Next to Normal to help them understand the real life experiences with Bipolar illness”

Every Saturday, following the 4pm performance, NAMI Massachusetts has organized an “Ask the Doctors” talk back session with a local doctor working in the area of mental illness. You will have the chance to ask the doctor any questions that came up while watching the performance, and discuss the real life treatment of mental illnesses like Bipolar Disorder, as seen in Next to Normal

Medical director for NAMI National.   American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology in Adult, Child and Adolescent, and Forensic Psychiatry.  Former DMH Commissioner MA.  On stage with Lisa Halpern, Vinfen Human Services.

March 24th –  Dr Bruce Cohen, M.D.

President and Psychiatrist in Chief Emeritus at McLean Hospital, head of the Shervert Frazier Research Institute, Director of the Molecular Special NAMI event – March 29th with Dr.Deborah L. Levy, Phd,    Dept of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, Director of the Psychology Research Laboratory at McLean Hospital. Specialist in Genetic Research. On stage with Dr. Ken Duckworth, M.D., Medical director for NAMI National.  American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology in Adult, Child and Adolescent, and Forensic Psychiatry. Former DMH Commissioner MA.

March 31st – Dr. Larry J. Seidman, Phd.

Director Commonwealth Research Center, Professor of Psychology, Harvard Medical School, Vice Chair (Research) Mass Mental Health Center Public Psychiatry Division, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC)    On stage with Dr. Michelle Friedman-Yakoobian, Phd,  Research Fellow Mass Mental Health Center  Public Psychiatry Division of the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center,   and Instructor in Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School.

April 7th – Dr. Matcheri Keshavan, MD

Vice Chair of Psychiatry, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Harvard Medical School.    Specialist in research and clinical care with early phases of psychotic disorders.   On stage with Dr. Kristen Woodberry, M.S.W., Ph.D. A founding clinician of the Portland Identification and Early Referral (PIER). Expertise in Cognitive Behavior, Dialectical Behavior, and Multifamily Psychoeduction. Research fellow Dept of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School with a primary interest in onset, and prevention of major mental illness.

April 14th – Dr. Peggy Johnson, MD

Chief of Psychiatry for Carney Hospital and Quincy Medical Center, formerly at Boston Medical Center.  Dr. Johnson is involved in treatment of individuals with serious and persistent mental illness, focusing on the medical/behavioral health interface.  On stage with Howard Trachtman, Certified Peer Specialist, a long time NAMI member and champion for people with mental illness.
