LEGISLATIVE

Legislative Intern

The most visible function of NAMI Mass is grassroots advocacy on a local, state, and national level. NAMI Mass played a key role in the passage of Parity Legislation, which mandates that mental health insurance benefits are equal to that of physical health care benefits. NAMI Mass has been featured in countless newspaper articles and television programs for its commitment to advocacy for adequate funding and services for people with mental illness. NAMI Mass’ most effective form of advocacy is achieved through coalition building.

NAMI Mass is a team based environment, where students play an equal role within the organization. All students will have a very active and visible leadership role within the organization and state. Students are responsible for developing, fostering, and leveraging community-based coalitions. Students follow relevant legislation and policy at the State House and are a catalyst in developing effective advocacy and recognition for people affected by mental illness. Often students will be a liaison between individuals and key policy makers. It is hoped that students will come with their own specific goals and interests so the placement can be enhanced to meet the student’s specific interests. While not necessary, many people who come to NAMI have a connection with mental illness. All who work with NAMI should be passionate and committed to advocacy for people with mental illness. The Executive Director recognizes the importance of providing students with hands on real world experience.
